Does your Giving match your Thanks?

When we enter the presence of our Holy God, our hearts should overflow with Thanksgiving! Gratitude is expressed in how we give back to the Giver of all good things. Giving with joy indicates that we understand that we are merely stewards of everything good we possess. We can’t allow things to possess us, we possess them, use them & they serve us. Then we return them to God as our service to Him. We give our whole lives *including our stuff” as a reasonable service to God. It’s the very least we can do.

2CO 9:10-15 KJV

Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

We all know what it feels like to give and give and get nothing in return. We want someone, somewhere to notice, to say “Thank you”. It is rude not to. Most parents can relate to this feeling. Children have an automatic sense of entitlement. We call it being “spoiled”! Oftentimes when we are given everything. We grow accustomed to receiving and expecting good things from God. We may even attempt to repay Him with our church attendance and half-hearted prayers. But isn’t He deserving of much, much more?

God tells us how to “repay” Him. It’s simple. He wants it all.

He wants all of our lives, all of our love and all of our obedience for always. We give our all to others. We should actually go broke from giving! The Bible instructs us over and over to give freely and to give to others as we have been blessed. It is our reasonable service to give it all!

So what holds us back from giving God our everything by giving to others? It is because we do not realize that we are simply caretakers of the blessing that we have received. We are merely stewards of all of the good things that we say we own and possess. But my prayer is that we are so possessed by the Spirit of God that we realize that everything we hold dear, all our “stuff” in this world is temporary, expendable, fleeting. We are pilgrims, aliens and strangers in this world.

Let’s get focused. Eternity is closer than it appears.

When a child is really thankful for what their parents have done, they find extra creative ways to express it. Real love does more than the minimum. This Thanksgiving, let’s be determined to show our thanks by giving to others in extravagant ways. Let’s do more than just the least!
