You’re Approved!

The Bible says to study to show thyself approved, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. II Timothy 2:15

So how is studying going? Are you consistent in studying the Word of God, not just reading? I have often had periods of inconsistent studying of the Bible. Life can get busy and if you fail to put God first, He may just get forgotten! It may be unintentional, but we are still being disobedient. Instead of making excuses, I ask the Lord to forgive me and recommit to studying the Bible the way I should.

How do you Study the Bible?

One of my first goals as a new christian was to read the entire Bible. I think it is important to familiarize yourself with your sword before you attempt to use it! Where do the Old and New Testament divide? Who wrote each book of the Bible? How does every section point to Jesus? This is a great place to start. Asking basic questions like who, what, when, where and how can be a stepping stone to your studying.

If you have read the Bible before, go through again and start to pull out areas of application for your life. Study individuals in the bible or take one book at a time and get a thorough understanding of each chapter.

Why study the Bible?

Unlike any other book ever written, the Word of God is ALIVE! This book is living and breathing. Its contents still changes lives and causes great conviction in the hearts of those who ask God’s guidance to help understand it. It is not rightly discerned without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This is why it is important to pray as we approach the Bible for study.

Knowing the scriptures gives you an advantage over your enemy. The Bible says that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” Matthew 4:4. It is sustaining and everlasting! The Word calls itself “the sword of the Spirit” Ephesians 6:17. It is an offensive weapon against the devil who seeks to steal from, kill and destroy you  John 10:10. Studying the Bible will help you to use it skillfully.

Jesus is the Word of God

The Word of God is eternal. Before a pen formed a word of what we now know as the Bible, the Word of God existed. The book you read is the inspired Word of God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us so that we may have a full revelation of God  (John 1:14). People wrote about Jesus throughout the entire bible – in songs, prophecy, experience and through visions. Nothing needs to be added to it and nothing should be taken away. It needs to be prayerfully studied in context and readily applied to our daily lives.
